Catherine "Cathy" Stout

Catherine “Cathy” Camden Stout of Ripley, WV passed away on July 30th, 2026 at the age of 72 after battling a long illness.

Cathy was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Charles “Chuck” Stout in 2021.

She is survived by her son Christopher Stout, daughter Caitlin (Sinnett) Stout, son-in-law Jonathan Sinnett, grandson Zephyr Stout, brother Andrew Casto and sister-in-law Loretta Casto.

Cathy retired from Jackson County Schools after decades of service to its special education and preschool programs. She prided herself as an educator and gave her heart to many students in her time as a special education teacher. She later worked as preschool coordinator for the county, ensuring children were given proper attention to have success within the school system. Even after she left teaching, Cathy continued to support special education within Jackson County, volunteering for Special Olympics every year, and keeping up with former students and co-workers.

She loved animals, and spent most every day tending to her horses on her family farm in Fairplain. When she wasn’t in the barn, Cathy enjoyed reading, listening to music, going to concerts, attending musicals, and adventuring to new places.

A special thank you to Ravenswood Care Center and its staff for all of their compassion in helping take care of Cathy in the last few years of her life, as well as Kanawha County Hospice- and thank you to all of the friends who paid her visits during her illness. Her good friend Judy Lieving spent a lot of time making sure Cathy was taken care of after she became ill, but after Judy passed away suddenly in March 2026, many stepped in to help Cathy in her place- and for that kindness, Cathy’s family is forever grateful.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter, or to the Alzheimer’s Association (Alzheimer's Association ) in hopes that we may someday have a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

A joint memorial service to celebrate Cathy and Chuck's lives will be announced in the coming days.
