Charlene "Char" Balis

Charlene “Char” Gandee Balis, 84 of Sandyville, passed away February 17, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family following an extended illness.

She was born May 31, 1938 in Belgrove, Jackson County, daughter of the late Otho and Elva Jane Casto Gandee. Char was a graduate of Gilmore High School and retired from the Jackson County Sheriff's Department where she serviced in the Tax Department. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of the Independence United Methodist Church, Sandyville.

She is survived by daughters Pam Lewis and her husband Jim of Sandyville and Robin Sheppard and her husband Gary of Rockport; grandchildren Jessica (Chad) Spears, Megan (Canden) Sharp, Mallory Ohse, Jonathan (Heather) Triplett and Kelsey (Josh) Smith; step grandchildren, Tyler (Logan) Sheppard, Chris (Candace) Lewis, Joshua Lewis and Adam (Tori) Lewis; great grandchildren Hunter, Cara and Lexi Spears, Grayson and Kinsley Smith, Finley, Ford and Colt Sharp and Vivian and Vanessa Triplett; step great grandchild, London Sheppard, Avonlea and Adeline Lewis and Beckett Lewis; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert “Bob” Balis; sisters Glennis Shepherd and Naomi McCrady and brother Carroll Gandee.

The family would like to thank Char’s niece, Linda Ross for all the help, love and support during her illness.

Funeral Service will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at the Independence United Methodist Church, Sandyville with Russ Hern officiating. Burial will be in the Independence Cemetery, Sandyville. Friends may call on the family from 12:00 pm until the time of service at the Church.
