"Duke" James Ralph Sisson

Mar 14, 1932 — Jun 23, 2026

Charleston

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of James Ralph Sisson, affectionately known as "Duke," on June 23, 2026. Born on March 14, 1932, in Charleston, West Virginia, Duke was a beacon of warmth and kindness throughout his 94 remarkable years. Duke was the beloved son of the late Henry and Lorena Sisson. He grew up in a loving home alongside his brothers, Robert Sisson and Bob “Bummie” Bumgardner, who have also passed. His early years in Charleston were marked by the values of family, community, and service—principles that would guide him throughout his life. In 1950, Duke answered the call of duty and served his country with honor in the United States Navy until 1954. During his service, he was awarded the National Service Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, reflecting his dedication and exemplary conduct. Following his military service, Duke found his calling as a diesel mechanic—a career he passionately pursued until his retirement in 1994. Known as one of the best in his field, Duke's expertise took him to distant lands such as the Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Yet, no matter where his work led him, his heart remained anchored to home and family. He shared 70 beautiful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Effie, who survives him. Together, they built a loving family that includes their children, David (Jennifer), Cama Coffman (Chucky), and Krista. Duke's legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Jacob (Jill), Sam, Bliss (George), Brooke, and Stacy, and his great-grandchildren, Layne, Eli, River, Kase, Archer, Zeke, and Jo. Each of them carries forward his spirit of kindness and generosity. Duke's life was one of simple pleasures and deep connections. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family, mowing the lawn, playing golf, and enjoying the tranquility of the beach and North Bend State Park. His warmth extended beyond his family to his church community at Allen’s Fork Community Church, where he found joy and fellowship. Duke never met a stranger, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand. His genuine nature and open heart endeared him to all who crossed his path, whether on his front porch or within the community. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion and service that will continue to inspire those who knew him. A service to honor Duke's life will be held on June 26, 2026, at 1:00 pm, visitation 11:00 - 1:00 at Allen’s Fork Community Church in Sissonville, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Meadowbrook Nursing Home, whose care and support meant so much to Duke and his family. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Isaac Ashley, the Sissonville Health Center, and everyone who took the time to visit Duke, enriching his life with their presence and friendship. Special thanks are extended to his roommate, Ferrell, whose kindness was a source of comfort to Duke. Duke's journey through life touched countless souls, and his memory will forever be cherished. As we say goodbye, we hold tight to the love and lessons he imparted, promising to carry his light forward in our hearts.
