Retired LT. Gary D. Spence, 81 of Homosassa, FL formerly of Kanawha County, passed away October 12, 2015 in Homosassa, FL following a sudden illness. He was born December 4, 1933 in Winfield, a son of the late Clay and Ethel Davis Spence. He was a US Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict and served in several countries and retired from the West Virginia State Police as a Lieutenant with over 21 years of service and was stationed in several counties. Upon his retirement from the State Police he worked as a Private Investigator with the law firm of Jackson and Kelly in Charleston until his second retirement in 1997 and moved to Homosassa, FL where he has lived until his death. Gary was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite, Member of the West Virginia State Police Troopers Association, a Life Member of the Hernando Sportsman Club of Brooksville, FL., member of the National Rifle Association and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He attended the North Hills Baptist Church in Sissonville as well as the Faith Baptist Church in Homosassa. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Clara Sue Spence of Homosassa, FL; daughters Barbara LeGue of Ripley and Sandy Oliver and her husband Joe of Cranberry Twp., PA; grandchildren Jessica Bailey-Wheaton, Brad Oliver, Jason Bailey, Eric Oliver and Kaitlin McCarty; three step daughters Sandra Gail Meadows of Huntington, Shelly Rae Clark (John) of Inveress, FL and Mary Allison Queen (Steve) of Charleston; foster brothers, twins Larry Gaylor of Scott Depot and Jerry Gaylor of New Jersey. Also survived by 9 step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. He will be missed by his German Shepherd "Molly". In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers Ronald Ray Spence, Kyle David Spence and Larry Clayton Spence and a sister Janice White. Gary stated in a letter "In passing from this earth, I have already said goodbye to my family but would like to add a farewell to all my friends and associates with the West Virginia State Police and Staff at the Jackson Kelly Law Firm. All my family and friends have made my 81 years on this earth a pleasure and I leave knowing that I have dedicated my life to my God, my family and my country. MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA!" Funeral Service will be 2:00 pm Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley. Burial with military honors and Masonic Rites will be in the Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes. Friends may call one hour (1 to 2 pm) prior to the service at the Funeral Home.
