Gene Groves

Eugene “Gene” Carroll Groves, 76, of Ripley passed away Friday, June 23, 2023 at Hubbard Hospice House with his family by his side.

Gene was born October 12, 1946 in Sissonville, WV a son of the late French and Opal Westfall Groves.

Gene worked for Columbia Gas with 42 years of service before his retirement. He was an avid hunter who also enjoyed fishing and golfing. Gene was an accomplished baseball and football player in his younger days and enjoyed coaching his sons’ teams when they were playing. Gene was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Ripley and served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Joyce (Kerwood) Groves; sons Jason Groves (Kristin), Tim Groves (Kelly) and Jimmy Groves (Hilary); grandchildren Morgan, Adelyn, Brooklyn, Jameson and Fallon. He is also survived by a brother, Bobby Groves and sisters Zella Fisher, Mary Hoselton and Brenda Sheets.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by brothers John, Bill and Larry Groves.

Funeral service will be 2p.m. Thursday, June 29th at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Pastor Steven Hamrick and Rev. Charles Hicks officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Fairplain Cemetery.
