George Ronald Walters, 76, of Ripley, died Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at 8:16pm. He was born February 15, 1945, son of the late George Amos Walters and Ruth Marie Haynes. Ron was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 27, 1957. He married Ruth Marie Workman on June 25, 1966, in Great Falls, Montana. George (Ron) graduated from Ripley High School in 1963 and played for the Ripley Vikings Football Team. While in the Air Force, Ron received his Air Traffic Control Training in 1965 at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. He served as an Air Traffic Controller for the US Air Force at Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana from 1965 until 1968 and received an honorable discharge from his service on August 4, 1970. Ron worked in the construction industry as a crane operator and he was involved in building The New River Gorge Bridge, which is now a part of the New River Gorge National Park. Ron was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local Chapter number 132 in West Virginia and Local Chapter number 400 in Montana. He later went on to become the owner and operator of Tree World, a tree service in Great Falls, Montana, where he taught his two sons, Rodney and Rob, about the tree service business. He spent several years in Montana and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors in the Big Sky State. Ron and his beloved wife moved back to West Virginia in 2013 to take care of the beautiful family farm on Walters Run, which has been owned by generations of the Walters family. Survivors of George Ronald Walters include: his wife, Ruth; children Rodney Sean Walters and wife Erin of Winterville, GA; and Robert (Rob) Wayne Walters. His grandchildren include Kimberly S. Walters, Celia E. Walters, and Madalyn S. Walters. His great grandchildren are Lilly Elizabeth Martinez and Miah. Survivors also include: his brother Robert W. Walters and wife Mary of Hurricane, West Virginia; sister Teresa McCartney and Husband David of Ravenswood, West Virginia; sister Neida Starcher and husband Chuck of Kenna, West Virginia; brother David Walters and wife Charlene of Campobello, South Carolina. Other survivors include aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews in West Virginia, Montana and Texas. George Walters was proceeded in death by both his parents, George Amos and Ruth Haynes. Visitation will be held prior to the service from noon to 12:45 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on Ritchie Ave., Ravenswood, West Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in George (Ron) Walters’ memory to the Charleston Area Medical Cancer Center, Charleston W.V. Funeral services will be held Friday February 4, 2022, at 1:00 P.M. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Ritchie Ave., Ravenswood, West Virginia with Military Rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard.
