Gerald Cleon “Gerry” McMillan, Jr. was born September 20, 1943 to Gerald McMillan and Juanita Oakley McMillan in Booneville, Mississippi. A day later his twin brother, Harold Leon McMillan was born. Early in his life, Gerry learned the high price of war when his father died from injuries suffered on the beaches of Normandy. The twins were four years old at the time. His mother raised the boys with the help of her parents, sister and brother-in-law. She died of a heart attack when the twins were 20 years old.
Gerry graduated from the University of Mississippi with a B.S. in Business Administration and Accounting. He joined the U.S. Government with the Department of Health and Welfare (HEW) as an auditor in Jackson, Mississippi and was stationed in Tampa, Florida. Later, he worked in Kansas City, Missouri, and San Francisco, California. When the environmental Protection Agency was formed in 1970 from parts of HEW he moved to Washington, D.C. as a management analyst. He was responsible for tracking the status of audit findings to Congress on a semiannual basis as required by the Inspector General Legislation.
He retired in 1995 and moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked as the assistant manager of a shoe store and Home Depot in several specialty fields. In 2011 he suffered severe health problems and went to live in assisted living facilities where he befriended many fellow residents. In 2019 he moved to Ravenswood Care Center in Ravenswood, WV.
Throughout his life, Gerry was a caring coworker and friend, many of whom remained so for his lifetime and became part of his extended family. He is survived by Anna Hopkins Virbick of Given, WV, Richard and Mary Townsend of Omaha, Nebraska, Keith Dipprey and Steve Brecheisen of Denver, Colorado, and Jim Fazio of Clinton, Maryland.
Gerry was a great person with a Heart of Gold and a twinkle in his eye! Love Richard and Mary Townsend.
Friends and extended family would like to thank Ravenswood Care Center and Kanawha Hospice Staff for the love and care given to Gerry during his time of illness.
Gerry passed away on June 22, 2025 and in honoring his wishes, he will be cremated and no service at this time.
