Jeremiah John Walker

Jeremiah John Walker, 49, of Covington, VA, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2026, after a long and hard-fought battle with cancer.

 He was born in Charleston, WV and grew up in Ripley.Jeremiah was the proud father of three children, who were the lights of his life. He was preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Alexis Jade, whose sudden passing at just 18 years old was the greatest pain of Jeremiah's life. Her memory remained close to his heart every day after. He is survived by his daughter Avery Mackena, 22, of Lewisburg, WV, who is in her first year of medical school, and his son Hayden Chance Bush, of Sissonville. His greatest desire at the end of his life was to see his children taken care of and successful, and he was incredibly proud of both Avery and Hayden.

From the day he was born, Jeremiah carried a larger-than-usual helping of orneriness, an unshakable fear of missing out, and a stubborn streak that never left him. He was a born jokester, always picking on somebody, always cooking up a prank, and always the first one laughing when it landed. If he was giving you a hard time, it meant he loved you. He lived life on his own terms, and that was simply who Jeremiah was.

 His life held its share of hard chapters, and he fought battles that many never fully understood. But those who loved him will remember the whole of him, his humor, his big heart, and his devotion to his children, and not the struggles that came along the way. Jeremiah was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Sandy Walker.

In addition to his children, Jeremiah is survived by his parents, Gary Walker of Ripley, WV, and Lisa Gilkerson of Covington, VA; sisters, Carrie (John) Williams of Covington, VA, and Megan Walker of Montgomery Village, MD; nephews, Caleb Taylor and Cason Taylor; niece, Katherine Schneider; stepbrother, Travis (Noily) Workman of Costa Rica; and stepsister, Audrey (Chuck) Waybright of Ripley, WV.

A celebration of Jeremiah's life will be held on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Waybright Funeral Home in Ripley, WV. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, followed by a short celebration of his life from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. There will be no graveside service. This will be an informal gathering, just as Jeremiah would have wanted. Please dress casually, no suits, no black, and come ready to share a memory, a story and a laugh.
