Joan McBurney, 84, of Ripley passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Hubbard Hopsice House following an extended illness. She was born June 28, 1933 at Niagra Falls, NY a daughter of the late John James and Grace Emily Church Hale. She was employed in the programing library at Union Carbide, but her main job was being a loving and nurturing mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who was always willing to listen no matter what the problem was without judging. In addition to her love for family she enjoyed ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, and watching sports on TV as well as any her grandchildren were participating in. She is survived by her children Rick McBurney(Kirsten) of Hudson, NC, Tim McBurney(Kim) of Hurricane, Tommy McBurney(Kathy) of Sissonville, and Becky Wendell(David) of Ripley; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Bam Bam” and Grandma; Sister Muriel Hale of Niagra Falls, NY; Four-legged companion, Sycamore. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Richard Livingston McBurney and sister Nancy Davidson. A memorial service will be held 6 p.m. Friday, January 12th at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Rev. Herman Robinson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
