John Lawson Winters

John “Lawson” Winters (Smiley) was born on July 27, 1942, in Fairplain, WV. He went Home to be with the Lord on September 20,2026 at home with his family after a battle with cancer.

He leaves behind his wife Mae Fisher Winters; his daughter, Cindy Winters Williams; two grandsons, Steven “Seth” Williams and Joshua C. Williams; and Brooke Miller Williams whom he loved like a granddaughter. He loved his great-great grandchildren, John Dawson Williams, Aaliyah Grace Williams, and Haven Faith Williams. Also surviving him is his brother, Edward Winters and sister Myrtle Winters Shamblen.

He will be joined in Heaven by his dad and mom, Audron Winters and Minnie Price Winters; his brother, Clifford Winters, his brother-in-law, Larry Shamblen, and son-in-law Steven C. Williams.

He retired from DOH after 36 years. He enjoyed working on the farm and coon hunting with his grandson and friends.

Lawson was known for his big smile and caring heart, so we pray when you remember him that you share a smile or act of kindness with someone.

In honoring his wishes, a Graveside service will be held at Aplin Ridge Cemetery (Gay) on Friday, September 25th at 3p.m. with pastor Bill Holley officiating.
