Kelly Gwen Hackney

November 4, 1965 — April 7, 2025

On April 7th, 2025, the world lost its brightest angel when Kelly Hackney was called to heaven after a courageous, nearly lifelong battle with multiple sclerosis. Surrounded by her loving family, Kelly’s spirit ascended, leaving a legacy of strength, love, and unwavering advocacy.

Kelly is survived by her devoted parents, Kay and Gene Hackney of Kenna, and her beloved daughter, Ashley Dunkle (Kyle Dunkle) of Jamestown, NY. She was the proud Mimi to her cherished granddaughter, Kora Dunkle, who was the light of her life. She is also survived by her sister Kim Miller (Brian Miller) of Advent, and her nieces Kelsey Miller, Brianna Miller, and nephew Hunter Miller. She was so proud of Kelsey, Brianna, and Hunter and was sure to tell everyone that would listen.

A graduate of Sissonville High School, Class of 1984, Kelly spent much of her early life working at CAMC before MS changed the course of her journey. Though the disease took much from her, including the ability to walk and participate in everyday activities, Kelly never lost her passion for life or her love for others. She remained a powerful advocate for multiple sclerosis research, organizing numerous fundraisers in the Ripley and Charleston areas. Even when her physical limitations prevented her from participating in person, Kelly continued to raise awareness and support MS research from home.

As a lifelong Mary Kay consultant, Kelly always had flawless makeup and radiant skin, a testament to her commitment to beauty inside and out. Her love for the simple joys of life included birdwatching from her front window, admiring the flowers in her yard, and watching deer visit her home. Kelly’s heart also swelled with pride as she cheered for the WVU football and basketball “boys”, rumor is that she “could be heard cheering her spirited voice through neighboring counties.

Though her MS diagnosis may have seemed like a cruel twist of fate—stealing her ability to travel, dine out, or engage in everyday pleasures—Kelly remained the brightest beacon of love, always smiling and radiating positivity. The world is dimmer without her in it, but the love and light she shared will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Kelly’s family, friends, and community will miss her dearly. She leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and the unyielding belief that even in the face of hardship, one can always choose to shine.

Friends and family may gather from 11-1 on Saturday April 12th, with a short service following at 1:00pm officiated by Rob Bumpus and Freeman Newhouse. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the Hubbard House (Charleston) in Kelly’s honor.
