Melvin L. Smith Melvin Linnaeus Smith, 74, of Kenna, passed away Wednesday evening, November 28, 2012 at home following an extended illness. He was born April 21, 1938 at Kenna, son of the late Stinson and Nona Good Smith. He was a heavy equipment mechanic in the surface mining industry and a union member. Melvin formerly belonged to the Army Reserves with the 812thOrdinance Company in Ripley. Surviving: His wife of 55 years, Marble J. Smith of Kenna; Sons, Melvin Lee Smith (Carla) of Kenna and Ray Smith (Drema) of Elkview; Daughters, Lynn Dunbar (Roger) of Kenna and Gina Vance (Timothy) of Kenna: Grandchildren, Kristy Smith, Eric Vance, Evan Dunbar, Cheyene Smith and Chasity Smith; Great-granddaughter, Mattie Smith; Brother, Stinson Smith Jr.; Sisters, Myrtle Ann Shamblin and Eugena Beckner. In addition to his parents, Melvin was preceded in death by a grandson, Mathew Smith. A funeral service for Melvin will be held Saturday, December 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Pastor Arnold Shaffer officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Smith family cemetery on First Creek Road, Kenna. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Kanawha Hospice for the loving care shown Melvin and the entire family during his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations honoring Melvin may be made to Kanawha Hospice. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
