Oris Eugene Shafer Oris Eugene Shafer, 83, of Ripley, passed away Friday morning, August 31, 2012 at his home following an extended illness. Oris or "Shag" as he was affectionately known, was born December 10, 1928 near Elkview, WV, son of the late Pharo "Tate" and Tressie Stoffel Shafer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and a retired pipefitter from Kaiser Aluminum with 30 years of service. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed raising a large garden each year. He will be missed by his family and friends. Surviving: Sons, Wayne Shafer (Vici) of Ripley and Shannon Shafer (Keisha) of Kenna; Grandchildren, Ashley Howery (Matt) of Ripley, Erica Conant (Adam) of Leroy, Whitney Offutt (Justin) of Ravenswood, Christopher Shafer of Ravenswood and Brittney Shafer of Ravenswood; Step-grandchildren, Blayke and Frankie Rings of Kenna; Great-granddaughters, Bailey, Delaney and Addison Howery and Lexi and Sydni Conant; Sisters, Betty Viola of Florida and Mary Faye Rogers of North Carolina. He also leaves Billy McClung, Mary McClain and Doris Leonhardt, three good friends who mourn his passing. In addition to his parents, Shag was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Shafer and an ex-wife, Georgia Shafer. The family is honoring Shag's request to be cremated.
