Richard E. Smith

Richard E. Smith, 91, of Leroy passed away Monday, March 28, 2016 at Jackson General Hospital, Ripley, following a short illness. He was born August 12, 1924 at Troy, WV, a son of the late Isaac Barrett and Lily Engle Smith. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a lifelong truck driver with many years of service for several companies. He retired from Kroger's after 19 years of service. He had a passion for farming and his cattle and was known by some as the "cow whisperer." Survivors include his daughters Gena Smith of Leroy, Melody Anderson (Dale) of Leroy, and Violet Maston (Clyde) of Sandyville; Grandchildren Caleb Smith, Paige Smith, Ben Smith, Sarah Smith, Austin Anderson, and Breona Anderson; Great-grandson Braylen Watson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Maxine Burkhamer Smith; Brother, Page Smith; and Sisters Helen Kurtz, Virginia Anderson, and Lily Dale Foster. Funeral service will be Thursday, March 31, 2016 at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Rev. Bob Keen officiating. Friends may call on the family on Wednesday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. Burial will be in the Baptist Grove Cemetery, Leroy. It was Smitty's request that everyone dress casual and wear their blue jeans.
