Roderick Cameron Matheny Sr., 63 of Ripley, passed away March 14, 2017 at St. Francis Hospital following a long illness. Rod was born November 13, 1953 in Charleston, WV to the late Roy Wayne and Emma Louisia (Knopp) Matheny. He was a 1971 graduate of Ripley High School. He retired from Constellium after over 30 years as a steelworker. He also served as the union safety rep for USW Local 5668. He was passionate about fire and emergency medical services and had worked at different times for Jackson, Kanawha, and Putnam counties as a paramedic. He served on the Ripley Volunteer Fire Department, starting as a junior firefighter while still in high school. Most recently he served as the Public Information Officer and Photographer for the department. Rod was also an avid photographer and was active in the Charleston Camera Club. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Grant Matheny. Rod is survived by his wife of 44 year, Shireene (Triplett) Matheny, son Cam Matheny, and granddaughters Alison and Danielle Matheny. He is also survived by his brother Richard Wayne (Anita) Matheny and nieces Lisa (Danney) Snyder, Shonnette (Larry) Johnson, and Jenni (Lance) Ankrum. Funeral Service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Pastor Dee Rhodes officiating. Friends may call on the family from 12 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made in Rod's memory to the Ripley Volunteer Fire Department.
