Roy B. Guthrie

Roy B. Guthrie, 77 of Ripley, went home to be with the Lord on October 27, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. Roy was born on August 18, 1940 at Reedy. He was a son of the late D.C. “Dutch” and Frances Matheny Guthrie. He was a graduate of Dunbar High School. He served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam and in the Army Reserves for over 24 years. After his time in active duty, Roy drove a truck for several years and was a Jackson County Deputy Sheriff and Officer in the Ripley Police Department. He retired from law enforcement, but he continued to serve his community as a Funeral Attendant at Parsons Funeral Home and later Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home, a Ripley City Councilman and later was elected Mayor of the City of Ripley. Roy was known for his beautiful singing voice and sang in many gospel groups including the Tru Tones Trio and the Builders Quartet. He was a faithful member of the Ripley Baptist Temple. He was also a member of the Sandyville VFW Post, the Ripley American Legion Post 107 and served on the Jackson County Honor Guard which provides Military Honors at funerals for Veterans. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Jackie Guthrie; daughters Kathy (Tom) White of Evans and Becky (Brian) Nuzum of Ripley; son Roy B. Guthrie Jr. of Bakersfield, CA; brother David Guthrie of Ripley; sister Sandy Peace of Newark, OH; grandchildren Hannah (Paul) Hesson, Adam (Deni) White, Paige Jones and Lucas Bower; two great grandchildren, Emma and Tucker White; two step-great grandchildren Karlie and Brady Hesson. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Campbell and brothers Myles and Charles Cottle. Funeral Service will be 1:00 pm Monday, October 30, 2017 at the Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Pastor Rick Perrine officiating. Burial with Military Rite provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard will be In the Given Cemetery, Given, WV. Friends may call from 6 to 8 pm Sunday at the funeral home.
