Shelby John Shaffer, 82, of Charleston passed away, Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at Charleston General Hospital following a brief illness. He was born July 28, 1934 at Sissonville a son of the late Harold and Mable Harper Shaffer. Shelby served his country for 4 years in the Navy as a PO2 and 2 years in the Air Force Air National Guard as a SSGT. He retired from Dupont where he was a chemical operator. He would start each day by reading his Bible. He loved going to church at Parsons Chapel Advent Christian Church in Charleston where he was a member for over 50 years, serving as a steward and a deacon. He was also member of the Masons, Shriners, and Eastern Star. Shelby never met a stranger and loved to talk to people. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Lela Tuttle Shaffer of Charleston; Sons Ronald Shaffer of Nitro, Harold Shaffer of N. Carolina, and John Shaffer of Charleston; and Sisters Violet Fields of Florida and Carol Burgess of Charleston. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley with Pastor Roger Breeden officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of service.
