Shirley Jean Kessel

Shirley Jean Kessel, 78, of Given, passed away Sunday morning, October 5, 2014, at Hubbard Hospice House following an extended illness. She was born June 6, 1936 at Montcoal in Raleigh County, one of 15 children born to the late Kyle and Queenie Pettry Milam. In addition to being a lifelong homemaker, Shirley also worked as a waitress at many area restaurants including the Village Cafeteria, Alpine Hotel and Imperial Restaurant. She concluded her career at McCoy's Motor Lodge after many years of faithful service. Surviving: Her husband of 30 years, Charles Kessel; Son, Harold Burgess of Given; Daughters, Sherry Burgess Fry (Bo) of Ripley and Karen Burgess of Charleston; grandchildren, Shali Hickman, Shawna Burgess Warner, Jason Burgess, Angel Jones Reed and Michael Jones; Sisters, Alice Spangler (Bob) of Whitesville, Mary Ferrell (Jack) of Kentucky, June Thompson (Gene) of Chicago and Patricia Milam of Louisiana; Brother, Paul Milam (Sue) of Kanawha City. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by a son, Steve Burgess, a daughter, Diane Jones, sisters Agnes Freemod, Joyce Stravrakus and Francis Milam and brothers Biull, Harold, Roy, James and Jerry Milam. A service celebrating the life of Shirley Jean Kessel will be 2p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Waybright Funeral Home with John Gunther officiating.
