Steve W. Ray, 84 of Kenna, known to many as “Homer” was born August 16th 1942 to parents Peter and Della Ray of Romance WV, passed October 19, 2026 after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Linda Dianne Siders Ray, father Peter Ray, mother, Della Shamblin Ray Siders, “Dad” Enose Franklin Siders, brothers Westal and Philip David Ray, and sisters Patricia Ray and Lorlie Ray Cobb.
Surviving is his son Steve Wilson Ray II, “DAUGHTER” in law Valerie Gail Pauley Ray, “GREAT” grandson Logan Isaac Ray, sister Shirley Siders Tignor her husband Mike Tignor and sister Tammy Jo Siders
Enlisting into the United States Army in 1960 Steve was stationed in Germany with the Signal Corp. obtaining the rank of Sargent. Once leaving active duty Steve returned to the States and served in both US Army Reserve and West Virginia National Guard. He loved his time in service of our Nation and was proud of his accomplishments.
A jack of all trades is better than a master of one. Well HOMER was certainly a Jack, but he was a licensed master of one. A master electrician for over thirty years he worked service and installation of service stations all over WV, and parts of KY, OH and VA. Chances are good if you pumped gas during the 70-90’s anywhere close by, HOMER easily could have installed or serviced the pump you used.
Beyond his talent at electricity he was a true solution finder. Very few things ever stumped HOMER. Though he like to act “not smart” he was a walking wealth of knowledge at making things work. He will be sorely missed by many when those head scratcher problems arise.
Steve had many talents and interests. Proud of his Native American ancestry he was highly read on the history. A faithful student of tradition and customs he walked his path the old ways. His knowledge and use of herbal medicine kept him with us a bit longer than some figured.
Fascinated by aircraft he took flight lessons in his earlier years. Though he never tested for his license he liked to share the stories of when he took class. Dedicating his life to taking care of his family he put many hobbies on hold. He spent his free time on a river bank reeling in bass or shooting muzzleloaders.
In later years he picked up the artist brush and painted many beautiful pieces. Most of which he gifted to friends and family. Next he tried his hand at jewelry, again producing some beautiful pieces. Most of which were given to friends and family.
He dearly loved his family and friends. It was his wish that everyone left simply remember the good times and not be saddened by his death. He loved you and never wanted to hurt any of you.
In accordance with Steve’s wishes there will be no public services. He will be laid to rest in the mausoleum at Floral Hills Garden of Memories in Sissonville.
