William "Bill" Casto

William Jeffrey “Bill” Casto, 66 of Ripley, passed away June 9, 2023, at Thomas Memorial Hospital following an unexpected illness. Bill was born September 16, 1956, Ripley, WV, son of Lois and William E. Casto. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Sydnie Johnson, and brother-in-law, Nelson Toler.

Bill is survived by his wife, Chana Casto, and children William Jeffrey (Kara) Casto Jr., Russ Casto (Andrea), Maddie (Derek) Stahl, Makenzie Casto, and son-in-law Tyler Johnson. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Elijah Casto, Cyrus (Mackenzie) Casto, Mya Casto, Ava Casto, Hadley Johnson, and Corbyn Johnson. As well as his siblings: David (Debbie) Casto, Mary Toler, Laura (Kevin) Matheny, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Bill graduated from Ripley High School in 1974. He was a three-sport letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. He attended WVU and graduated from Marshall in 1977. After college, he worked as a paramedic in Jackson and Kanawha counties for a year. He then began his long career in medicine at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in 1987. Throughout his medical career, he was Chief of Staff at Jackson General Hospital and Director of the Emergency Department at Montgomery General Hospital. Bill dedicated his life to caring for others. Over the course of his career, he touched the lives of thousands of patients both inpatient and at his private practice in Ripley. He will be remembered as a true healer who will leave a lasting impact on the community he served.

Bill was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He was an avid WVU sports fan, especially Mountaineer football, and he attended many games with his family. Bill loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them play sports. He enjoyed beach vacations and golfing with his family. He was a very generous and witty man with a way of bringing comfort and hope to everyone even in the toughest of circumstances.

Whether you called him Bill, Billy, Dr. Casto, Doc, Pop, Dad, or Papa, he touched many lives during his time on Earth, and his memory will be cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.
